Half the Battle

This past week, a first-grader I tutor came in and declared, “I want to read this book to you!” She’s a hard-working firstie, and she’ll work on whatever I ask her to, but she’s never volunteered to read something to me. So, imagine the flutter in my little teacher heart when she told me she wanted to read! In my teacher mind, this desire to try something challenging is half the battle. My little firstie is well on her way to becoming a fluent, proficient, independent reader.

Her parents deserve all the credit in getting her to this half-way point. They got her books she was interested in reading. She loves elephants, so they got her a few books in the Elephant and Piggie series by Mo Willems. She has become so enamored with the books that she reads them all the time! I’m super proud of this little reader, and of her parents for paying attention to their daughter’s interests.

Whether it’s a certain story or character, or just the way someone read to us when we were younger, something triggered our love of reading. I would love to know what your reading story is. And, if you don’t love reading, I would love to know about that, too. Share your stories in the comments.

Happy reading!
