I have always loved the beginning of the school year! The new backpacks, clean shoes, freshly sharpened pencils that haven’t magically disappeared…it’s so easy to feel motivated. Unfortunately, though, that feeling is fleeting. The daily grind starts to wear your down. I get it. I’ve been there. But, there’s a trick to staying motivated through the school year —
Start being reflective early!
Waiting until there is a problem to solve to think about your teaching practice might lead some sleepless nights and dragging your feet to make changes. Thinking about making huge changes in order to resolve an issue can really clutter your mind. And, a teacher’s mind has no room for that kind of clutter. There is too much to think about once we get into the heavy lifting of assessments, school-wide activities and events, parent conferences, etc. Although we can’t always prevent a problem or resolve it quickly, being reflective early on helps to keep you motivated to push through those more challenging or busy times. Reflecting often on your goals as a teacher, your goals for your students, and how you plan to reach those goals can make a big difference in seeing you through to the end of the school year.
How do you keep motivated for the long haul? I would love to know! Please feel free to leave a comment and share your tips and tricks for staying motivated during the long school year. If you are looking for a way to get started in being reflective, I have some great FREEBIES in my TpT store that can help you out.
Until next time…Happy Teaching!
