I did it! It’s finally done! I received both doses of the covid-19 vaccine. This is a huge milestone in this long journey of virtual teaching. I just wanted to share my experiences in getting the vaccine and my hopes for what it means for the future.
In March, I qualified to receive my vaccine as an educator in California. I received my first dose of the Moderna vaccine at the end of March. A sore arm and some light fatigue were the only side effects I experienced, but I was still glad that I rescheduled my students so that I could take a couple of days to rest and recover. I consider getting the vaccine to be a part of my teacher self-care, and taking some time to recover from the side effects is just as important to self-care as getting the vaccine.
Just last week, I received my second dose of the Moderna vaccine. Was I glad I rescheduled my students so I could recover from the side effects! This time around, I experienced a low-grade fever for about 24 hours and several days of headaches, body aches, and deep fatigue. I had heard that the side effects from receiving the second dose were a bit stronger, and, in my case, they were. The side effects from the second dose felt like having a light flu.
Although I’m now vaccinated, I’ve chosen to spend the rest of the school year teaching virtually. As I write this post, I still haven’t decided if I will return to meeting with my students in person for summer session. Making these decisions is an essential part of my self care. My hope is to have a return to the classroom in the fall for the 2021-2022 school year.
I hope this post shed a little light on the experience if you haven’t gotten your vaccine yet. Getting the vaccine, and the rest time after, is definitely part of teacher self-care.
