On the Monday after the last day of school, I attended an optional professional development offered at my school. I can’t say it was the best way to start off my summer break, but I’m glad I joined in. One of the main topics was what we expect our fall schedule to look like. One of the many revelations I had when I took on this new job as a virtual teacher was the importance of scheduling EVERYTHING. When I taught in the traditional brick-and-mortar school setting, I think I took scheduling for granted. Now that my students spend less time with me, I’m able to set up the time and duration of each task.
When I worked in the traditional classroom, I fit in tasks when I could to minimize how much time I would have to spend working on tasks after school. That method never worked well for me. Now, I’m seeing how important it is to schedule time for each of the many tasks we teachers have throughout the school year. My plan for this coming week is to map out my daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual tasks for the upcoming school year. I will also have a separate seasonal map to schedule activities and events for special times of year. My hope in doing this is to keep myself always working ahead and looking forward.
I would love to know what you are doing this summer to prepare for next year. Please share your summer teacher tasks so we can all learn from each other.
